Hummingbirds are delightful creatures to watch effortlessly hovering in the air constantly seeking a source of food. If you have a humming bird feeder near your dwelling it can be a joy to watch them hovering near the feeder, leaving to their nest and returning often.

As with any wildlife near your living area it is important to become familiar with some common problems and questions that may arise when dealing with hummingbirds. One common question and concern is what should you do in case you run across a humming bird injured by flying into a window or other stationary object? First of all it is important to understand more than three-quarters of all newborn humming birds die within the first year of life. Most die due to predators, accidents and disease, so it is important we minimize the chances of any human induced accidents.

Often the hummingbird will simply be stunned and can be rejuvenated. The first thing you should do is approach the bird with your hands out in an attempt to startle the bird into flight. If there is no movement from the bird then examine the bird closely for any signs of blood, broken wing or broken bill. If there are no signs of injury then you can try to rejuvenate the bird by giving it a drink of sugar water. First, gently slide the bill in and out of the feeder several times looking for any signs of rapid movement from the feathers or crown or any movement from the tongue.

If the bird will not show any signs of drinking then call your local rehabilitator for further information. If you cant reach them you can also try your local veterinarian for assistance. Some important information to be aware of is that humming birds need to feed frequently. If you are taking care of an injured bird make sure to feed it several times each hour. This can be a difficult responsibility and is better left to a rehabiliator or vet that deals with wild birds.

If you are taking care of an injured humming bird long term then it is important to know sugar water is not a sufficient long-term diet for hummingbirds. They also will need a source of protein and fats that typically come from tiny insects like fruit flies. The easiest way to provide a healthy diet is to purchase a hummingbird formula from your local veterinarian.

Last of all it is important to be aware it is against federal and state laws in the United States and Canada to keep a hummingbird in captivity without special permits.

You need to build trust before you can build sales.

A website of your own with loyal readers will lead to a mailing list with loyal readers. These people are eager to get your emails and read them for the latest tidbit. And that means that they will be exposed to your ads and your products time and again.

Sarbanes Oxley Whistleblower Cases

Something that cannot be denied is that popular culture has effectively glorified whistleblowers and has put them on a pedestal as heroes. In today's times employees feel more courage to expose a malpractice on the part of their employer. There is now an increasing attempt to address this form of litigation.

The Sarbanes-Oxley Act was passed in the year 2002. It was as a response mechanism to a slew of scandals related to corporate accounting. Many of these scandals shook up the financial markets and so the Sarbanes-Oxley Act was introduced to create tougher standards on financial reporting.

Congress began to implement the most extensive whistleblower protections for the publicly traded companies. The employees who belong to such companies are well protected from retaliation when they report on a very wide category of legal violations. These violations could be primarily relating to any form of financial misconduct, fraud, securities violations or more.

The very first adverse Sarbanes-Oxley decision was issued in the year 2005 and it involved a company that was in fact quite far displaced from Wall Street. It was brought on by David Welch who was the CFO of a holding company for numerous small town banks situated in the Blue Ridge Mountains. More often than not, even a single share never changed hands. The audit committee of the bank actually consisted of three farmers, a school official and a local dentist. What Welch did was that he brought a number of irregularities in accounting to the attention of the president of the bank. He claimed that these were issues that needed to be addressed. When he was asked to certify the financial reports belonging to the company, Welch refused. He was then terminated on grounds of insubordination.

Welch then went on to file a claim with the Department of Labor. However, his claim was dismissed. On appeal he won in the court of a federal Administrative Law Judge. In complete disbelief, the lawyer representing the bank was quoted in the local newspaper as stating that the law had never been intended to protect employees in the face of a dispute with management. He said that it was actually intended to remove corruption in big companies that have a large employee base. This should give you a perspective of Sarbanes Oxley whistleblower cases.

Could Alcohol Rehab Be Your Future Car's Destination?

Nissan, Saab and Volvo have been researching built-in breathalyzer-type detection systems that could help keep drunk drivers off the road. In some versions, if you fail the test the car wont start. Now thats a great idea, but I think it would be even better to add some more cool technology that a) positively IDs the driver, b) counts how often youre trying to drive stoned, and c) if youre over a predetermined limit, the car calls the nearest treatment center, drives you there, parks out front and honks the horn for the alcohol rehab guys to come get you.

Okay, thats kind of out there maybe its something for the future. But even as it is now, there are big markets for this technology, such as commercial truck fleets, buses, and company fleet cars. And lets not forget parents buying cars for their teenagers who want to keep their kids alive and out of alcohol rehab.

In the new Nissan concept car, alcohol-detection sensors check odor, sweat and driver awareness, issue a voice alert from the navigation system and lock up the ignition if necessary. It has odor sensors on the both the driver and passenger seats that can read alcohol levels. Another detector in the gear-shift knob measures the perspiration of the driver's palm when starting the car (I can see the sales of driving gloves getting a boost).

Nissan's car includes a camera that monitors alertness by eye scan, rings a bell and issues voice messages if something is amiss. The technology is still in development, but the company says the combination of detection systems will keep an eye on whos behind the wheel. This will help ensure theres no monkey business during the testing. Here again, I think a drivers testing history should be captured so that a problem drinker can be encouraged to attend an alcohol rehab center.

Scandinavia has been out ahead for years in the efforts to reduce impaired driving. The idea for designated drivers originated there, and alcohol rehab is an accepted and acceptable part of life. Now both Saab and Volvo, the two Swedish high-end car manufacturers, have also been working on driver alcohol testing. In the Saabs Alcokey system, not yet on the market, you breathe into a special mouthpiece to measure the level of alcohol in your breath, and a computer decides whether or not to allow the engine to start. Drivers are on the honor system they could easily ask a tee-totaling passenger to take the test for them. Volvos breath test technology already equips 5,000 buses and trucks in Sweden and has been offered for several years. Its Alcolock or Multilock systems include a breathalyzer-type unit mounted in the seat belt and an indicator on the dashboard that turns green or red depending on the results. It can also prevent the engine from starting if the test is failed.

At first glance, you might think that anyone with a drinking problem wouldnt want one of these vehicles. But when you think about it a little more, it actually makes sense. Deep down, no one really wants to be a criminal or a danger to themselves and others. Having a car that warns you when youve had too much to drink, and particularly too much too often, could really help someone get the idea (in a nice, non-personal, non-judgmental way) that its time to get their problem handled and head for alcohol rehab.
